St Ives Orchid Fair 2008: ANOS Warringah Group Display
Although a chilly weekend it proved to be one of the most successful orchid fairs held. ANOS Warringah Group, once again, had a great display even if we came 8th; it was many of the public that mentioned our display as being their choice. Being a native group we went for a native theme with ornamental possums, wombats, a frilled neck lizard and kangaroo, which the public endeared too. For some growers the season was early and some wonderful plants were exhibited. Ralph Lumby displayed some wonderful specimen plants that really made the display a pleasure to see. Bill and Lorraine Dobson had a few nice Dendrobium speciosum in flower, making a large splash of colour. Many Dockrillia species and hybrids made a backdrop that gave the effect of a temperate rain forest.
Foremost in the display was a beautifully flowered Dockrillia teretifolia grown by Trish Peterson, winning first in its class and then going on to win Champion Australian Native Species. Well done Trish. Other prizes were picked up by Bill and Lorraine Dobson, Gary and Harleen Williams and John and Cathy McAuley. Bill Dobson also picked up first and second in the photography section class 101, for his photographs of Pterostylis and Diuris corymbosa. Congratulations to all the winners.
Many members helped over the weekend at the fair but special thanks to all those who supplied the foliage plants and orchids, also to those who helped with the set-up and pull down. It all went with clock work precision. But of course next year will be better!!!
